Originally, “Uzukuri” refers to a rod made by soaking the roots of cut reed grass in water, drying them, and then tying them into a cylindrical shape with hemp string. By repeatedly rubbing the surface of the wood with this “Uzukuri” rod, the softer sapwood is removed, leaving the heartwood behind and creating a textured grain pattern. This type of finish, which brings out the wood's natural grain, is called the “Uzukuri finish.”
Compared to conventional flooring, flooring treated with this “Uzukuri finish” creates a three-dimensional effect, allowing you to appreciate the texture of the wood with both your eyes and your skin. The sensation underfoot is pleasant, and the uneven surface makes it slip-resistant, making walking feel effortless. It is also said that the warmth of the wood helps boost the body's natural healing abilities.
Since it is made of solid natural wood, you might be concerned about scratches, fingerprints, and discoloration—common issues with solid wood. However, the “Uzukuri” finish preserves the heartwood, making the surface harder and more scratch-resistant, so it is less prone to the scratches that occur in daily life.
Furthermore, it naturally regulates humidity according to the season, acting as a “humidity regulator” powered by the blessings of nature.
The number of craftsmen making this brush was drastically reduced and these brushes have become extremely difficult to obtain recently.
How to Use: When the brush is worn out, remove one roll of the string that is wrapped around the body.
The center string should be pulled in and tightened as strongly as possible. If it's loose, it will be difficult to polish.
