How to use: Soak this into warm green tea. After the reed is open, ready for playing.

Reeds are made of natural material which is very fragile. Some people seem to break them after soaking in warm tea, but this is not a defect unless there is sound leakage. Please be careful.

--When to Replace Your Hichiriki Reed--

A hichiriki reed (ro-zetsu) is a natural reed and is a consumable part of the instrument. Its lifespan varies depending on how often and how long it is played, as well as the individual characteristics of the reed.

There is no fixed replacement period. We recommend replacing the reed when you notice changes such as:

  • The reed becomes harder to blow or requires more effort.
  • The sound becomes weaker or loses its usual richness.
  • The pitch becomes difficult to control.
  • The reed no longer opens properly after being moistened.
  • Cracks, splits, or other visible damage appear.

Even if the reed is not visibly damaged, its playing characteristics can gradually change with use. For consistent performance, it is a good idea to keep a spare reed and replace the current one when its response or sound quality begins to deteriorate.
