The hichiriki is often called a "flute" by newcomers, but technically, it is a double-reed instrument (more like a pocket-sized Japanese oboe).

The Root Pitch: In traditional Japanese Gagaku music, a standard hichiriki has a fundamental pitch centered around F4 (the F above middle C).

The Pitch Range: It typically covers roughly one octave.

Because the reed is so large compared to the body, the player can wildly bend the pitch using their breath and lips. This sliding note technique is called embai, meaning the exact "key" is incredibly flexible and expressive during performance.

Comes with an English fingering chart.

Please Handle with Care: Reeds are made of fragile, natural material. Splitting or cracking after soaking in tea is a handling issue, not a defect, unless there is a sound leakage.
